Mnemosyne Atlas
The first exercise of thesis seminar relied on the methods of art historian Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas to generate a constellation of images related to each student’s initial thesis statement ramblings.
This exercise was paired with our first 250 word written statement, which we had to read out loud (yikes).
size: 16in x 10in ~ 40.6cm x 25.4cm // final media: print // working media: inDesign // inspiration: who knows at this point

Deschooling through media is a study in the ways in which media and digital technologies are dismantling, restructuring, mutating and revolutionazing spaces of learning, with a specific interest in schools destined for children and teens.
This thesis will begin by seeking understanding of the existing modes of learning through a critical taxonomic study of their architectures, methodologies, technologies and tectonics. The goal is to develop an understanding of the ways in which humans learn in analog and digital formats, as well as a comprehension of the historical and current systems of control (#deleuze+guattari) and thought standardization that are in place in each of the educational typologies which are part of the case study.
Ultimately, deschooling through media seeks to (almost always) understand, (often) assist and (sometimes) limit media in the restructuring of education through the deliberate usage of the ‘stuff’ of architecture. This ideal will be explored via the intense alteration of an existing school through the lens of media, a proposal in which the architecture will be simultaneously ‘deschooling’ the building while also creating a (hopefully) new typology. Additionally, the architecture will articulate the role of the school within a larger societal system of educational media, community relations, and standardization of thinking.
